Today is the official release of my book: No Sweat: How the Simple Science of Motivation Can Bring You a Lifetime of Fitness.
To honor this exciting moment in my career, I made a brief video explaining what I’ve found is the foundational reason that people don’t stay motivated to exercise. In this video, I describe how choosing The Wrong Whys for exercise leads short-term motivation and keeps us stuck in a vicious cycle of failure. It’s only about 2 minutes – Don’t miss it! (Click on the image below).
Now back to other big news. No Sweat is officially out today! I’m proud to say that No Sweat received a “starred review” by the Library Journal, Dan Pink called it “One of 5 books to know about,” and it is already having an impact in people’s lives, evidenced by the Amazon reviews that keep rolling in. Here’s an example of what people are saying:
“What makes MAPS so useful and unique is it drills down to what matters most to people and offers motivational strategies to start and stay on track. Segar teaches us to ask the right questions by identifying our limiting beliefs as well as what fuels us in life.”
To acquaint you with No Sweat’s key messages, below are the four core principles and practices that are the foundation of my MAPS program:
- M is for Meaning: Break free of negative associations with exercise, let go of should dos for body shape or health, and focus on the Right Whys to motivate a lasting commitment to rewarding, manageable physical activity.
- A is for Awareness: Get in touch your feelings about exercise, choose to move in ways that feel good, acknowledge that everything (taking the stairs, a five-minute walk) counts—and count everything, and transform exercise from a chore into a gift.
- P is for Permission: Recognize the self-harming symptoms of “caretakeritis,” learn how to prioritize you daily self-care needs, and revel in the power of movement to fuel positive emotions, clarity of mind, and energy for what you care about most.
- S is for Strategy: Adjust to everyday realities and discover easy ways to calmly negotiate challenges to your exercise plans from a Sustainability Training that teaches how to rebound from stress and setbacks, place consistency first, and sustain a physical movement habit for the pure joy of it.
If this sounds like something that you or other people you know need, you can buy No Sweat at your local bookstore or online now.
Feel free to share this post with others who share your interest in the science-based how-to’s of creating lasting changes that can survive in the real world.
