In the last few newsletters, we talked about the need for approaches to behavior change that can survive within the complexities of the real world: not in theory, or under ideal conditions, or based on simplistic thinking or outdated science.

Yet so much of what we’ve been taught when it comes to changing behavior is based on those very things. While these approaches sound great on paper, most do not have the requisite strength to last when we try to implement them within our complex, ever-changing lives.

But there’s a new story of behavior change in town — and this time, it has a happy ending! I’m so excited to share these ideas with you in my new book. Welcome to The Joy Choice!

I created the Joy Choice concept and wrote this book about it to help those of us who can’t count on automatic habits, whose busy lives are constantly messing up their plans to eat healthy and exercise more, and who want a new way to approach their healthy eating and exercise decision making.

“If you’re frustrated with your progress in exercising and eating right, this book is for you!” ―Dan PinkNew York Times bestselling author of Drive

If you, or your clients or patients, keep “failing” at the healthy eating or physical activity plans you try, the problem is not personal failure but the outdated story of behavior change we’ve been told for decades.

The old story is based on many false assumptions, such as the idea that habit formation for exercise or healthy eating can work for most people (hint: it can’t); or that aiming to achieve our intended eating or exercise plan when it faces a conflict will better produce sustainable change than changing up the plan altogether (hint: it won’t). And there’s strong science to back up my contentions.

The Joy Choice is a fresh, joyful, brain-based solution that turns the old behavior-change paradigm on its head so you can make changes in eating and exercise that can finally last. You’ll find easy and fun ways to stay consistent with your greater goals, while still tending to the meaningful people and demands in your life. And you’ll have fun doing it — my new book is filled with stories about my work with clients and industry, engaging graphics, and specific tools you can use immediately to implement meaningful, positive changes, once and for all.

You’ll discover:

  • The science-based reasons why habit formation can’t work for many when it comes to exercise and healthy eating
  • The four core decision disruptors that derail our healthy eating and exercise choices in the moment and how to avoid them
  • The mounting research showing that aiming for imperfection instead of “the perfect execution of the plan” is better for creating lasting changes in eating and exercise
  • How to re-frame the daily challenges that threaten to disrupt our eating, exercise, and other types of self-care plans as “choice points” — opportunities to think flexibly and connect to our values
  • A fun and easy science-based decision tool to support our brain’s innate self-management system in the moment, just when we need it.
  • A new mindset that is effective, liberating, and, yes, joyful!

It’s time to break the rules of behavior change so we can finally change our behavior for good!

I couldn’t be more excited to share these new ideas and tools (can ya tell?), and I hope you are too!

Pre-orders are a big help for a book because they build buzz among booksellers, the media, and other readers. To show my gratitude, if you pre-order The Joy Choice  (before April 26, 2022) you will be invited to participate in an exclusive, live four-session book club that I will host + you will receive the special workbook I designed to use during it. The pre-order process is easy. Check it out!

Feel free to share this post with others who share your interest in the science-based how-to’s of creating lasting changes that can survive in the real world.
